The Past

I was born and raised in Virginia by my parents and two younger siblings. While growing up, I played every sport from volleyball to field hockey until I stumbled upon theatre my freshman year of high school. I was faced with many challenges in high school, some were easier than others, but they never stopped my determination to be my best self all the time.

At the end of sophomore year I received the 2018 National Cappies Award for stage management. It wasn't until after I had accepted the award that I realized stage management wasn't just an extracurricular activity. While the environment I worked in still presented me with many challenges, at the end of the day, I was happy as long as I was getting to stage manage.

The Present

I am Abbey Helfen, a stage manager and aspiring venue manager with a passion for creating meaningful art that strongly impact audiences. I will soon be graduating Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage & Production Management, where I have gained well-rounded knowledge and strong transferable skills in various aspects of theatre production, from lighting and sound to costume and scenic design.

As a perpetually curious individual, I am constantly searching for ways to build upon my knowledge and develop new skills. Time management, attention to detail, proactive problem solving, and proficiency in numerous software systems make me to be an exceptional stage manager, but it's my ability to be dependable, organized, observant, communicative, empathetic, patient, and respectful that make me successful.

The Future

What is my five to ten year plan? Well, I know that I want to enjoy these coming years of my life. Whether that be coordinating and managing events, touring as a stage manager, or something entirely new, I will push myself everyday to be better and continue learning. Ten years seems a lifetime away and I could give you multiple scenarios to where I hope to be, but overall, I want to be happy and enjoying the job that I have so I can start a family.

As for what comes next, after graduation, that will completely depend upon who and what opportunities present themselves and give me a chance. Though, as a dreamer and hardworking individual I hope that my opportunities all me to give back to others and bring joy to others lives.
